August Heat Andrea Camilleri fiche de lecture -
August Heat by Andrea Camilleri, is the tenth instalment in the Inspector Montalbano series, adapted as a major BBC4 television series. This edition featuring a stunning redesigned cover.
Montalbano quickly slammed the trunk shut and sat down on top of it. When the beam from Livia's torch shone on his face, he automatically smiled.
'What's in the trunk?' Livia asked.
'Nothing. It's empty.'
How could he possibly have told her there was a corpse inside?
The lazy, slow month of August at the height of the Sicilian summer is, Inspector Montalbano assures his girlfriend Livia as they prepare for a relaxing holiday in a villa he has found for them, far too hot for any murders to be committed. But when Livia's friends' young son goes missing, a chain of events is sparked which will certainly ruin the Chief Inspector's pleasant interlude.
A secret apartment and a grisly find in an old trunk are just the beginning, as Montalbano navigates his way though the case, as well as coping with the sweltering heat, the suspicious death of an Arab labourer and the tempting lure of a beautiful girl . . .
August Heat is followed by the eleventh book in the series, The Wings of the Sphinx.

He throws together an extemporaneous lunch of shrimp with lemon and oil as gracefully as he dodges advances from attractive women.”—Los Angeles Times“[Camilleri’s mysteries] offer quirky characters, crisp dialogue, bright storytelling—and Salvo Montalbano, one of the most engaging protagonists in detective fiction…Montalbano is a delightful creation, an honest man on Siciliy’s mean streets.”—USA Today“Camilleri is as crafty and charming a writer as his protagonist is an investigator.”—The Washington Post Book World“Like Mike Hammer or Sam Spade, Montalbano is the kind of guy who can’t stay out of trouble…Still, deftly and lovingly translated by Stephen Sartarelli, Camilleri makes it abundantly clear that under the gruff, sardonic exterior our inspector has a heart of gold, and that any outburst, fumbles, or threats are made only in the name of pursuing truth.”—The Nation“Camilleri can do a character’s whole backstory in half a paragraph.”—The New Yorker“Subtle, sardonic, and molto simpatico: Montalbano is the Latin re-creation of Philip Marlowe, working in a place that manages to be both more and less civilized than chandler’ Los Angeles.”—Kirkus Reviews(starred)Présentation de l'éditeurAugust Heat by Andrea Camilleri, is the tenth instalment in the Inspector Montalbano series, adapted as a major BBC4 television series. 2 internautes sur 2 ont trouvé ce commentaire utile.Even Homer nods....Par Laura MorlandI LOVE Camilleri's Montalbano series, but even great writers have their off days, or (in this case) their off books. I read a few chapters of August Heat, but I didn't even feel like finishing it!A more reliable reviewer is my husband [John Rhodes], who has read all 10 of the Montalbano series (all 10 translated into English, that is) and he told me that it was the only one he didn't like. We have American friends living in Narbonne who are eager for English-language books, and I gave them four other books in the series that we had with us here, but I didn't bother to give them this one.Andrea Camilleri has been quoted as saying that sometimes he's written a "Montalbano book" just to get the character off his back. Maybe this time inspiration didn't come along for the ride....
